- Title
A Classical-Liberal Response to the Crisis of Bioethics.
- Authors
HALL, LAUREN K.
- Abstract
The article presents a discussion of the field of bioethics, arguing that it has largely served merely as a philosophical seal of approval on the consensus of the medical community, rather than functioning as an independent field of study which could serve as a check or balance on the medical perspective regarding such issues. The case of a Hasidic boy whose family wanted to keep him on life support after his doctors had determined that he was brain dead is cited in this context. It is noted that such moral and ethical decisions typically involve tragic dilemmas, rather than clear cases of right and wrong which could be reliably decided in court. The potential usefulness of a classical-liberal perspective on bioethics is described.
