- Abstract
The article focuses on the history of the theatrical playbill in 19th century Europe. Topics covered include features of the earliest playbills, the practice of bill-posting in London, England and in Paris, France, impact of lithography on playbills, innovations introduced by U.S. printing to theatrical advertisement, problems of illegibility and ephemerality with traditional posting, effect of the introduction of the advertising column and the development of the art poster.
