The article presents a speech by American novelist, poet and playwright David Madden to the Thomas Wolfe Society on May 29, 2010 in Greenville, South Carolina, in which he challenges members of the society to consider Thomas Wolfe as a mountain writer who became a world writer, a novelist who acted as quickly as he possibly could to flee the mountains in his already cosmopolitan state of mind.
