- Abstract
The article discusses issues concerning port logistics. It relates the beginning of containerized cargo shipping in April 1956 at the Port of Newark, New Jersey. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has predicted that the international container trade will double from current levels by 2020. It discusses several logistical problems when dealing with large cargo ships. It also describes an activity for students to emphasize modeling, simulation and the application of port logistics to familiarize them and promote the exploration of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) related careers.
