THE PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE ON CURAÇAO AND ITS ROLE IN THE FORMATION OF PAPIAMENTU.
- Authors
Joubert, Sidney; Perl, Matthias
- Abstract
The article explores the role of the Portuguese language on Curaçao in the formation of the Creole language Papiamentu. According to Alonso Zamora Vicente's classic dialectology, Papiamentu is based on the Afro-Portuguese Creole carried over by slaves from Africa. An overview of the Afro-Portuguese spoken by slaves and the Portuguese spoken by Sephardic Jews in the Caribbean area is also presented.
