- Authors
ENGLESBERG, PAUL
- Abstract
The Bellingham Riot of 1907, as reported in Columbia: The Magazine of Northwest History, recounts a violent incident in Bellingham, Washington, where Punjabi immigrants were targeted by a mob of white men. The Punjabis were subjected to physical assault, theft, and destruction of their property, leading many to flee for their safety. The riot was driven by economic concerns, as the Punjabi laborers were viewed as a threat to local mill jobs and wages. Consequently, Punjabis were expelled from the city, resulting in a significant decline in East Asian settlement in Bellingham. The article sheds light on the Bellingham riot of 1907, which specifically targeted Punjabi immigrants in Washington State. The riot was motivated by xenophobia and racial animosity, with white workers at a lumber mill organizing against the perceived threat posed by Punjabi immigrants. The Punjabis faced discrimination, arrests, and violence leading up to the riot. The article also highlights the lack of support from the media and government officials, with some even justifying the actions of the rioters. In response, the Sikh community has been actively working to raise awareness about these historical injustices and promote healing and reconciliation.
