- Abstract
Samuel Joseph McNaughton, an influential ecologist, passed away in 2024. He was born in Maryland but spent much of his childhood in Missouri, where he developed an interest in nature. After studying agriculture in college, he took a plant ecology course that sparked his curiosity in scientific investigation. McNaughton went on to conduct groundbreaking research on plant ecotypic variation and grassland ecology, particularly in the Serengeti ecosystem. His studies revealed the complex interactions between plant communities and grazing herbivores, as well as the effects of environmental factors. McNaughton's work provided valuable insights into the management and conservation of grassland ecosystems. He was also a dedicated teacher and mentor, and his impact on the field of ecology is widely recognized.
