- Abstract
A study titled "Cardiovascular mortality in bipolar disorder: population‐based cohort study" highlights the high rates of cardiovascular disease mortality among individuals with bipolar disorder. This is part of a larger issue of premature mortality in individuals with severe mental illnesses, who die up to 15 years earlier than the general population, with 70% of this mortality gap attributed to physical disorders. The study emphasizes the need for better implementation of clinical practice guidelines and evidence-based interventions to address this problem. Integrated care models that consider all determinants of health, including social drivers, are proposed as a critical step towards effective solutions. The authors suggest a five-step approach to tackle this issue, including filling knowledge gaps, reviewing integrated care models, addressing political challenges, addressing financing, and conducting research on the practicality and sustainability of integrated care models. Collaboration among patients, healthcare professionals, policymakers, and citizens is crucial in achieving effective, person-centered care for individuals with comorbid severe mental illnesses and physical disorders.
