Evidence-based non-drug treatments in dementia: reminiscence therapy.
- Authors
Wilks, John
- Abstract
This article explores the use of reminiscence therapy as a non-drug treatment option for dementia. It highlights that medication has limited benefits, leading researchers to investigate alternative therapies. Reminiscence therapy involves discussing past experiences and memories using prompts like photographs and music. Studies have shown that this therapy can improve mood, wellbeing, behavior, and quality of life for individuals with dementia. However, the effectiveness of reminiscence therapy can vary depending on the setting and methods used. Barriers to implementation include inconsistent therapy presentation and training, as well as differences in response based on gender and age. Despite these challenges, reminiscence therapy shows promise as a non-drug treatment for dementia.
