- Abstract
Anna Neill's book, "Human Evolution and Fantastic Victorian Fiction," explores how certain nonrealist Victorian narratives challenge prevailing assumptions about human nature and its limits in the context of theories of human evolution. Neill argues that the concept of deep time in evolutionary theory, which involves gradual changes over long periods, was often used to justify ideas of human exceptionalism and colonial violence. Through readings of various texts, including children's books and utopias, Neill demonstrates how these narratives subvert dominant conceptions of humanity, race, and social possibility. While the book could have delved more into the fantastic elements, it is still recommended for scholars and advanced students of Victorian culture.
