- Title
ANOTHER LETFER OF DAVID HUME.
- Authors
Popkin, Richard H.
- Abstract
The article reports that in the Folger Shakespeare Library's manuscript collection of English actor David Garrick's correspondence, there is part of a holograph letter of philosopher David Hume that contains no salutation, or address, and only the date February 7. The letter clearly is about Hume's affairs while he was the gentleman-companion to the mad Marquess of Annandale. Since Hume's tenure in this post was from 1 April 1745 to 16 April 1746, this letter must be from 7 February 1746. The letter probably has no connection with David Garrick. The data in Mossner's book "Life of David Hume" indicates that Hume only came to know Garrick personally around 1759. The letter starts off much the same way as do several of Hume's letters to Sir James Johnstone, the brother-in-law of the Dowager Marchioness of Annandale.
