- Title
Concepts of Memory and Approaches to the Past in Medieval Icelandic Literature.
- Authors
Hermann, Pernille
- Abstract
in this article the author discusses how the concepts of memory and approaches to the past are dealt with in medieval Icelandic literature. Icelandic literature is different from other Scandinavian literatures because of its distinctive use of the vernacular language and its ability to develop Icelandic sagas and Snorri Sturluson's "Edda." The author investigates the use of the past in Icelandic medieval literature and two concepts of memory used in Iceland when early records of the past were made. The first memory concept involves the idea that memory is stored past experiences. The second concept looks at memories as the result of interplay between the past and present.
