The article critiques the novel "The Octopus: A Story of California" from Frank Norris. It presents an overview of the early years of California in American History. It discusses various events that inspired Norris for the writing including the Mussel Slough Tragedy of 1880, a dispute over land titles between the farmers of the San Joaquin Valley in California and the Pacific & Southwestern Railroad Co. of California.
