- Abstract
Because cefotaxime has such a potent in vitro activity its effectiveness was tried in vivo using small doses to treat uncomplicated urinary tract infections due to enterobacteria in old people. Seven patients had 5-day courses of 500 mg twice daily, and eleven 50 mg b.d. The results were very good; the only relapse was in the second group. However cefotaxime failed to sterilize the urine of two patients with mixed infections associated with indwelling catheters. The urine antibiotic levels and activity against the infecting organisms together with the response to treatment suggest that the in vitro findings are reflected in vivo.
