- Abstract
The article investigates the activities and interactions of teachers and students in high school science classes in Australia. Specific purpose is intended to identify and record data on teacher behavior, classroom interactions and student utilizing ethnographic techniques to gain understanding of the culture and life of secondary-school science teachers. Ethnographic research provides insights about school practice as it really is. Findings revealed that first, secondary science teachers equate task completion with student learning. Second, majority of the class time is devoted to whole-class interaction during which the pace of instruction depends on the responses of target students. Third, teachers held different expectations of their students during classwork and laboratory work. Fourth, some disruptive behavior occurred in all classes.
