- Abstract
The article presents a study which examines the characteristic of a large-effect Kasalath-derived resistance quantitative trait loci (QTL) allele on chromosome 4 of rice to the parasitic plant Striga hermonthica. It notes that Striga-resistant germplasm can be used in a cost-effective control strategy to prevent loss of yield due to Striga. It emphasizes the importance of validating QTL in various environment and genetic backgrounds. The position of a Striga resistance QTL of major effect has been confirmed and narrowed down by the study, and proved that it may be a tractable target for marker-assisted selection (MAS) programs.
