- Abstract
Introduction: in childhood, vision assumes crucial importance in the child's integral growth. Within this context, the misuse of screens can interfere significantly, greatly impacting this development process. Objective: to analyze and describe the manifestations associated with excessive screen use by the pediatric population and its impact on child development, through a literature review. Development: inappropriate use of screens can cause negative consequences for child development, such as language impairment, cognitive deficits and emotional and behavioral difficulties. It may also be associated with a greater risk of obesity, sleep disorders and psychological difficulties, in addition to ophthalmological manifestations. Conclusion: excessive use of screens in childhood can have negative impacts on the cognitive development and physical and mental health of children and adolescents. Therefore, the guidelines from entities, such as the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics, stand out to limit the time of exposure to screens, especially for younger children, in order to mitigate the bad effects of this practice. It is also important to highlight the need to monitor the use of high-risk media by responsible companies.
