- Abstract
Self-medication consists of the selection or use of medications by individuals to treat selfdiagnosed pathologies, or symptoms, without prescription or supervision from a physician or dentist. During the pandemic caused by COVID-19, there was an increase in the consumption of medicines and, most of the time, without prescription. Given this context, the present work aimed to verify the impacts of self-medication during the period of the COVID-19 pandemic and analyze its influence on this behavior. The study is of a descriptive, retrospective nature, considered an integrative literature review, performed through a search for original articles, in English and Portuguese, available in full, published in the period from 2020 to 2023 in the LILACS and MEDLINE databases. In this sense, with the evidence presented in this review, the article aims to demonstrate how self-medication was harmful to the population in the period of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the ways in which this self-management occurred in various areas, for example, in patients who had chronic, psychiatric and rheumatological diseases.
