- Abstract
INTRODUCTION: At birth, premature newborns are sent to the Neonatal Unit, a care environment that has several stressors factors capable of influencing the development of these newborns, such as noise and constant handling. Thus, in order to avoid negative repercussions on its maturation, the health team in these places must provide humanized assistance. Facing this perspective, bathing routinely performed in these units with the aim of sanitizing the newborn can cause different physiological and neurobehavioral consequences, which depend on the way it is promoted. OBJECTIVE: To identify national and international studies about different types of baths performed in premature newborns and understand how they influence physiological and neurobehavioral changes. METHODS: This is an integrative review composed by 19 articles, which were selected from the PubMed, Virtual Health Library and Cochrane databases, with the aim of answering the guiding question: "What are the physiological and neurobehavioral impacts on the preterm newborn during the application of the different types of baths available in the literature?". Original articles were included, with a time frame of 10 years and in English, Portuguese or Spanish. Studies that focused on other themes, in addition to theses and dissertations, research projects, articles in Arabic and that did not have their texts available in full were excluded. RESULTS: The study consists of 19 articles that were categorized into 4 groups according to their similarities, which are: traditional tub bathing, swaddled bathing, sponge bathing and chlorhexidine bathing. Except for the chlorhexidine bathing, all other categories showed statistically significant differences in physiological and neurobehavioral impacts on premature newborns. It was shown in studies that swaddled bathing ensured greater relaxation, less behavioral disorganization, helping the baby's growth and development, minimizing stress, weight loss, saturation drop and apnea, better thermal regulation and a decrease in crying. The traditional tub bathing and sponge bathing presented as main results a significant decrease in body temperature, tachycardia, desaturation and changes in skin color. CONCLUSION: The studies that covered the search pointed out that the swaddled bathing ensured a greater humanization of care when compared to traditional tub bathing and sponge bathing, which were more harmful to the health of newborns. Therefore, this review helps to demonstrate to professionals the importance of this topic and contributes to the planning of strategic actions in the area of neonatal nursing. It is essential to adapt interventions for their humanization, in order to stimulate neuroprotection, the patient comfort and the stability of vital signs (such as temperature, heart rate and saturation), aiming to provide an improvement in the quality of life of neonates.
