- Abstract
Ficus benjamina L., is a species that has ornamental characteristics, is widely cultivated in parks, gardens and urban afforestation, being tolerant to pruning. This species is one of the most cultivated exotic trees in southeastern Brazil. Obtaining seminal seedlings of this plant is not possible in the semi-arid region, requiring the use of clonal propagation techniques for its multiplication. The substrate and the clonal multiplication technique are very important factors for the production of quality seedlings, as it influences the initiation and rooting of the species. In this sense, this work aimed to identify a commercial substrate to be used as a control treatment in future research in which alternative substrates will be used, and if the clonal technique by minicutting has the potential to be adopted for the propagation of Ficus benjamina L. Initially, a mini-clonal Hedge of two varieties of the species was established as a source of vegetative propagules for the installation of the experiments. The commercial substrates used were Tropstrato® and Basaplant®. The minicuttings of each variety were made with a length of 10 cm, with a reduction in the leaf area of the minicutting. From 70 days after planting, the mini-cuttings were transferred to the shade house and at 112 days the experiment was finalized. For each variety, an experiment was set up in a completely randomized design with two treatments and six replications. Each plot consisted of nine minicuttings, resulting in one experiment for each variety consisting of 108 minicuttings. At 70 and 112 days, survival data were analyzed and, at the end, rooting and root aggregation in the substrate. Weekly, up to 112 days, data were collected from roots observed at the extremity of the tube. The minicutting technique showed great potential for the production of seedlings of both varieties, and both substrates are recommended as a control treatment for research using the minicutting technique of Ficus benjamina L.
