- Abstract
This issue of the AILA Review sets out to position early language learning as a distinctive field of enquiry within the discipline of applied linguistics and education. We follow the ISCED classification in their choice of international terminology to describe these two sectors as I kindergarten i and I primary. i Research in the field of early language learning Given recent policy changes there is an urgent need for research that will clarify the distinctive features of young children learning a new language in the formal context of school classrooms.
