- Abstract
Nowadays, physicians are highly qualified to provide medical treatment, particularly when confronting organic disorders. However, it is also recommended that they master doctor-patient communication, an especially important skill when disclosing diagnoses with poor prognosis; appropriate behaviour can be learned. Here, we review the literature on this subject and discuss the reactions of patients faced with imminent death and the manner in which they prefer to be informed of poor prognoses. We also analyze doctors' perceptions. Finally, we describe the suggested guidelines developed by Dr Buckman. The difficulty is not in communicating the news, but how to communicate it, bearing in mind that each patient has distinctive coping mechanisms.
