- Abstract
Introduction. Hypoglycemia is the most frequent metabolic problem in the newborn, its late detection and inadequate management lead to different sequelae in the neurodevelopment of the newborn. Given its relevance, the objective of this study was to describe the incidence of neonatal hypoglycemia and the clinical characteristics of the infants who presented it in a hospital in western Mexico. Methods. An observational and prospective study was carried out in Hospital General de Occidente in Jalisco, Mexico, during the period from March 2018 to November 2018. Newborns of 34-42 weeks of gestation who did not have criteria for admission to NICU, but who presented risk factors for the development of neonatal hypoglycemia were included: being a child of a mother with Diabetes Mellitus; child of a mother with intake of beta-blockers or oral hypoglycemic agents; newborns with low or large weight for gestational age according to the FENTON PGEG tables; those with birth weight <2500 grams or> 4000 g; with intrauterine growth restriction (RCIU) and those who required positive pressure ventilation. Results. The analysis included 119 newborns; of these, twenty (16.8%) presented hypoglycemia. The majority of cases were symptomatic and the most common clinical manifestation was the presence of respiratory distress. Most individuals had more than one risk factor. Being the son of a mother with diabetes and the history of restriction were the factors that showed possible association, however without having statistical significance. Conclusions. The occurrence of hypoglycemia in patients with risk factors is a relevant phenomenon due to its possible neurological impact. The risk factors that showed a possible association with hypoglycemia were: being the son of a mother with diabetes and the history of intrauterine growth restriction. The individuals who presented hypoglycemia mostly had more than one risk factor and the main clinical manifestation was respiratory distress.
