- Abstract
Millennial learners with diverse and innovative-centric mindsets to learning have posed ambiguity to the sustainability of the education ecosystem. In particular, the connection between emotional intelligence and learner diversity with socioeconomic factors is one area that remains questionable. Therefore, this study set out to examine emotional intelligence among Malaysian learners and to identify the factors that could influence the emotional intelligence level. Four variable factors were looked at, including (1) gender, (2) programs studied, (3) students' backgrounds, and (4) ethnicity. Survey questions were gathered among three hundred business and engineering students ranging from Year 1 to Year 3 at two Malaysian colleges. Results revealed that there were no statistically significant differences between emotional intelligence and gender (p = 0.31). There was no statistically significant difference between emotional intelligence between the students of business and engineering (p = 0.78). However, statistically significant differences were found between the emotional intelligence of Malaysian students and the international students (p = 0.00). Differences in the mean score of emotional intelligence were found significant for the ethnicity groups (p = 0.00). The findings in this study suggest that the teaching and learning methods and learners' adaptability are important and can be enhanced through the facilitation of socio-intervention programs.
