- Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the Holstein dairy cow's physiological conditions in the cold season (January-February) and hot season (June-August) which were feeding in different kinds of barn. Dairy cows were fed in the tunnel-ventilated, water-padded (TW) barn and the conventional free-stall (CF) barn. In the morning (8-10 o'clock) and afternoon (1-3 o'clock),6 dairy cows fed in each barn were selected and measured for respiratory rate (RR) and rectal temperature (RT). At the same time, the barn temperature, relative humidity and temperature-humidity index (THI) were recorded. The results showed that in the morning of the cool season, the RT, RR and THI of the TW and the CF barns were 38.2 ± 0.4 vs. 38.6 ± 0.3℃, 34.5 ± 10.3 vs. 32.1 ± 9.1 breath/min and 68.5 vs. 66.3, respectively. In the afternoon, they were 38.3 ± 0.5 vs. 38.5 ± 0.4℃, 40.6 ± 9.6 vs. 37.7 ± 11.0 breath/min, and 66.1 vs. 69.3, respectively. In the morning of the hot season, the RT, RR and THI of the TW and the CF barn were 39.0 ± 0.5 vs. 38.8 ± 0.4℃, 65.3 ± 22.8 vs. 61.4 ± 12.4 breath/min and 84.0 vs. 84.2, respectively. In the afternoon, they were 39.1 ± 0.5 vs. 39.3 ± 0.6℃, 73.4 ± 14.8 vs. 69.8 ± 15.1 breath/min, and 81.3 vs. 84.7, respectively.
