- Abstract
TV sitcoms from the English-speaking world have worked as a longstanding and popular formula. With its six-decades history, the genre has condensed beliefs, evaluations, ideology, and relevant themes. Two series released in 2021, WandaVision and Kevin Can Fuck Himself, deploy a set of sitcom conventions to interrogate the ways of looking established by this format. Despite their differences, both productions provide a critical inquiry on the genre, its promises and illusion about the American family and, specially, the role of the wife. Content analysis allows for exploring the way in which these two series rewrite the sitcom genre and revise problems of representation onscreen as well as their impact on the spectator’s gaze.
