- Abstract
Livescribe pencasts, which are interactive online versions of notes and audio, were created as supplementary resources to help students understand core undergraduate cell biology topics. Students at all academic performance levels reported that they used the supplemental pencasts and that the pencasts helped them learn. Pencast viewing trends typically spiked just before an exam, indicating students used pencasts as a study tool. Student opinion about the usefulness of pencasts was determined using a 5-point Likert survey at the end of the semester, and the student survey responses were matched to the grades they received in the course. Pencasts are easy to create, and our method for producing pencasts with the assistance of an undergraduate student was published on YouTube. Students' preferences for certain cell biology topics were identified. Livescribe pencasts are an important pedagogical option for instructors to consider because pencasts are an engaging way for undergraduate students to experience additional resources to help them understand core concepts in a STEM course.
