- Authors
Briggs, Robert H.
- Abstract
The article discusses the social aspects of the 1875 trial of the former Mormon elder John D. Lee for his role in the 1857 Mountain Meadows Massacre in Utah. Particular focus is given to the relationship between Utah's Mormon and non-Mormon (who are referred to as Gentiles) population during the second half of the 19th century, including the role that the Utah political party the Liberal Party played in the antipolygamy campaign against the Mormon Church. The role that the assistant to the U.S. Attorney in Utah Territory Robert Newton Baskin played in the prosecution of Lee is discussed.
