- Abstract
This article seeks to examine the ability of managers and trade union officers to predict workers' preferences in New Zealand. The findings of the study provide some empirical evidence on the possible existence of a membership-leadership gap inside the union. Secondly, by comparing the predictions of management and officers, they offer a means of determining which group is most aware of workers' preferences, or whether all three are missing each other in psychological space. It is noted that a comparison of officers' predictions with actual workers' preferences is some indication of how sensitive union officialdom is to the needs of its membership on issues that matter to them.
