- Abstract
Catherine de Médicis’ inter-vivos donation to her beloved granddaughter Christine de Lorraine is examined in a roughly chronological study. The essay calls attention to this unprecedented royal sixteenth-century gift and considers the nature and meanings of Catherine’s strategic devolution of substantial movable property. The legal, political, dynastic and personal influences shaping the functions of the donation, which was in addition to Christine’s dowry and inheritance, are explored. An analysis of this freely given gift is central to our understanding of the inventory made of them. The goals are to provide a socio-historical context to the manuscript and to provide readers with a meaningful understanding of the manuscript as a source for future study. A transcription and translation of the inventory is provided by an online appendix.
