- Abstract
The article focuses on the popularity of zombies and its potential use as a tool in boosting awareness of public health issues. Information on the dual identity of zombis in Haitian voodoo folklore is provided. In 1921, the zombie folklore was featured in the silent horror film "Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari." There are several similarities between people afflicted with rabies and zombiism including mode of transmission and physical characteristics. According to the authors, people can be inspired to be prepared for and prevent outbreaks of infectious diseases via the zombie analogy. The authors also believe that public health outreach can take advantage of a fear-driven psychological preparation as a motivating tool for community action.
