- Abstract
Rheumatic fever (RF) is a late non-suppurative complication of upper respiratory tract infections by beta-hemolytic streptococcus group A occurring in genetically predisposed individuals. The disease can affect many body systems, especially the heart, joints, skin and CNS. The involvement of the heart in the form of rheumatic heart disease is the most important manifestation of acute RF is the only one capable of causing death. The disease remains a major public health problem, especially in developing countries. The present work aims to present the current epidemiology of acute RF and rheumatic carditis, clinical aspects, in addition to proper diagnosis of both.
