- Abstract
A novel method for navigation of an autonomous mobile robot is proposed, based on the concepts of cognitive maps and graphs, goal-oriented action, sensory snapshots, and automatic selection of landmarks. We discuss the biological relevance of these concepts, describe a scalable implementation of the model, and report on tests conducted in simulated and real environments. We extend the homogeneous place graph to include explicit representations of goals and argue that the method can easily be extended to solve a number of more advanced navigational and cognitive tasks.
