- Abstract
Cytotoxicity studies on composite resin materials have shown that dental resin monomers such as HEMA and TEGDMA are able to modify the cell response, metabolic activity, and DNA synthesis in various cell lines. Scientific reports indicate that monomers can act as cellular environment stressors by altering the balance between oxidants and antioxidants species, affecting cell homeostasis, which can result in cell damage. The purpose of this review is to present the findings on antioxidant cell response to reactive oxygen species produced during exposure to resin monomers, as a mechanism to control highly sophisticated enzymatic and non-enzymatic mechanisms involved in that response. Deeper knowledge about cell effects of dental materials can help provide restorative alternatives that minimize the side effects of polymer restorations.
