- Abstract
In The Palace of Illusions, Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni has reworked the illustrious Hindu epic the Mahabharata. The novel is presented from a female perspective, unlike the classical narrative. The author has made 'Draupadi' the protagonist of the novel, thus providing the reader with a fresh perspective on the well-known tale. Divakaruni has depicted Draupadi as independent and motivated to take her own decisions, unlike in the classical narrative where she is submissive and obedient in a patriarchal world. This study discusses the extent of contribution of mythology to modern literature, using the example of Divakaruni's The Palace of Illusions, which is a thought-provoking retelling of a classical narrative.
