- Abstract
One of the latest reciters and interpreters Mathnawi in the Ottoman Empire, Mehmed Es'ad Dede of Salonika was the reason for Tahir al-Mevlevi to join the Mevlevi order. Mehmed Es'ad Dede was a Sufi and intellectual who taught Persian and Mathnawi. Tahir al-Mevlevi first sent his memoir about Mehmed Es'ad Dede to be published in Dede's another disciple Hüseyin Vassâf's Es'adname and then to Mahfil magazine published by Tahir al-Mevlevi himself. In this article we deal with Mehmed Es'ad Dede's life, character, works, interpretation of Mathnawi, and the end of the years he spent with Tahir al-Mevlevi. In the appendix, we have transliterated memoirs published in Mahfil Magazine, Tahir al-Mevlevi's entry about "Mehmed Es'ad Dede" in Musavver Dâiretü'l-Maârif, and Hüseyin Vassâf's respond in Es'adname to Tahir al-Mevlevi's letter consisting his memoirs.
