- Abstract
Objective: This study was designed to compare the masticatory performance in complete denture wearers between their poor fitting old and new dentures and between genders with their poor fitting old and new dentures. Methods: The sample comprised of 10 patients (5 males, 5 females), aged 48-78 years who have obtained their new pair of complete dentures at Faculty of Dentistry, University of Malaya. Each subject was given three portions of peanuts, 3g each. Masticatory performance was measured by using standard sieve technique. Paired sample t-test, independent sample t-test and Mann Whitney U-test were used to analyze data. Results: The masticatory performance in new complete denture wearers is significantly different from poor fitting complete denture wearers (p<0.05). The mean masticatory performance obtained from the 10 subjects with their new denture is 30.85% and is higher than their poor fitting old dentures, which is 11.99%. However, the masticatory performance was statistically insignificant between gender (p=0.690). Conclusions: Masticatory performance of new dentures has higher level of performance than old dentures. A significant improvement in masticatory performance was noted with a change from poor fitting old denture to new dentures with peanuts as test food. Within the limitations of this study, there appear to be similarities between both genders in masticatory performance.
