- Abstract
Periodontal diseases represent the sixth category of complications induced by diabetes mellitus, being a factor of major risk, influencing the incidence and severity of related periodontal diseases. The prevalence of diabetes in patients suffering from periodontitis is higher than in those with a healthy parodontium. Aim: The present study evaluates the correlation established between the value of glicemy from capillary (CBGLs) and sulcular gingival blood (SBGLs), respectively, examining the blood from gingival tissues, taken over during routine periodontal examinations. Material and method: The study was carried out on 30 non-diabetics and 30 diabetics with moderate up to severe periodontitis, randomly selected from the initial group of patients with diabetes, subjected to routine clinical periodontal tests. The SBGLs and CBGLs values were measured with a Kroger glucometer. Results and discussion: The average values of capillary (MCBG) and sulcular (MSBG) glicemy recorded in all samples were of 190.57 and 168.6, respectively. The MCBG level was of 269.73 in the tested group, and of 111.4, respectively, in the control. The MSBG level was of 240.27 in the tested group, and of 97.03, in the control group, respectively. The present study proves the existence of a close correlation between SBGLs si CBGLs in both the diabetics and the non-diabetics under investigation. Conclusions: A family history of diabetes, as well as a more severe periodontal disease are to be found in diabetics. Having in view that 50% of the persons suffering from diabetes are not diagnosed as such, an assessment of their glicemy from gingival sulcular blood during routine stomatological examinations may be recommended as an adequate method for the identification of potential diabetics, due to the correlation with the glicemy from the capillary blood.
