- Title
LAS PUBLICACIONES EN CUBA TRAS LAS INDEPENDENCIAS HISPANOAMERICANAS.
- Authors
José SÁNCHEZ BAENA, Juan
- Abstract
The article focuses on Spanish colonial control over Cuban newspapers and periodicals during the period 1823-1834, in the aftermath of the independence movements in the Latin American Spanish colonies. The author discusses the lack of freedom of the press during this period, citing the censorship of various local and imported publications including "El Habanero" and "Ocios de los españoles emigrados" and noting the official support for pro-Spain newspapers such as "La Gaceta." He also considers the Spanish Royal Order of May 1825, which set up a Military Court in Havana, Cuba, for the purpose of prosecuting political dissidence and further controlling the circulation of printed works.
