- Abstract
The article discusses ways in which entrepreneurial biotechnology companies are managing to succeed in the challenging business environment of South Africa. The country is plagued with mass unemployment and endemic poverty. It also has the largest number of people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) of any country in the world and the seventh highest incidence of tuberculosis. This prominence of disease provides incentive for the development of a biotechnology sector. South Africa has the potential to develop a strong global pharmaceutical market due to its research and development base, its expertise in using wild-type or natural organisms to produce a product, and its high level of biodiversity.
