- Title
Politics torpedo biotech as EU priority.

- Abstract
The article reports that ambitious plans by the European Commission (EC) to double biotechnology research spending during 2007-2013 were quietly shelved during the run-up to a political summit of EU heads of state on June 15-16, 2005. The present budgetary impasse, combined with an ongoing paucity of funding, has cast doubts over the long term development of a pan-European research effort that can rival that of the U.S. In part, this can be attributed to a general hostility to the EU throughout its 25 member states. Yet its programs can prove helpful to biotech companies in practical ways.
