- Abstract
Metabolic profiling is a complex discipline that includes molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, physiology, analytical chemistry and bioinformatics. It is of particular interest to plant researchers because a systematic analysis of metabolic networks promises to provide new insights into the response of plants to genetic and environmental changes. Until recently, metabolic profiling focused mainly on developing technology capable of identifying and quantifying metabolites and exploiting that information to link phenotypes to genes. Two approaches to metabolic profiling are typically employed. One uses comprehensive metabolite profiling to produce quantitative and qualitative measurements of the maximum number of metabolites. The other uses high-throughput comparisons based on less inclusive, but more rapid, methods. Several promising comprehensive techniques include liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-nuclear magnetic resonance and a capillary electrophoresis-mass spectrometry.
