- Abstract
Introduction: Children with craniofacial anomalies often present to ORL, with upper airway obstruction, sleep apnea, hearing impairment as well as speech and swallowing problem. Amongst them, airway problem is the one that causes significant morbidity and mortality. Methodology: A retrospective review of medical records from 2005 to 2008, which consisted of syndromic patients with airway problems, was performed. The symptoms at presentation, severity of problems, intervention taken were described. Results: A total of 31 patients were identified. The age of presentation ranged from day one of life until seven years old. Down syndrome patients were the majority of cases. Snoring was the commonest complaint, and most of the patients required some form of surgical interventions. Conclusion: A multidisciplinary approach is warranted. For the ORL surgeon, the role is to assess and provide adequate airway for ventilation and continuation of life.
