- Abstract
The structural and literary similarities among Judges 2:1-3; 6:8-10, and 10:11-14 are due to their belonging to the same literary genre, covenant lawsuit. They include introduction, historical prologue, accusation of unfaithfulness, and, in the case of 6:8-10 and 10:11-14, announcement of punishment, but the differences among the passages show that the form was not a straight jacket. 2:4-5 and 10:15-16 can be classified as penitential liturgies. The three pericopes share similar terminology, literary techniques and syntax. With respect to their literary function in the structure of Judges, they have links with their immediate and mediate context, and they may serve as introductions to the three groups of stories of the liberator judges. They also show a progression in Yahweh's anger with Israel and in the sincerity of Israel's repentance.
