- Abstract
The article provides a look at the medical discourse concerning life expectancy, gender, and work in Vienna, Austria from 1900 to 1950. Beginning with the first twenty-eight years of the 20th century, when there were numerous medical reports about working women, continuing through the time of the National Socialists and World War II, when women were expected not to work, and then from 1945 to 1950, the article traces the publications of public health doctors such as Alfred Fischer and Ludwig Popper. It also refers to the work of medical doctor and sexual researcher Max Hirsch.
