- Title
Does the Priest Have to Be There? Contested Marriages Before Roman Tribunals. Italy, Sixteenth to Eighteenth Centuries.
- Authors
Cristellon, Cecilia
- Abstract
The article presents the author's analysis of records of the Holy Office beginning in the late 16th century that related to conformity to Catholic marriage dictates. The Church's Council of Trent in Italy established requirements that a marriage be conducted by a parish priest with at least two witnesses present, without specifying the former, creating confusion among clerics and the laity. Documentary analysis shows how the prescribed rules were understood and circumvented both to end unwanted marriages and to sanction transgressive or socially disapproved marital unions.
