- Title
Is there a direct link between skin barrier dysfunction and asthma?
- Authors

- Abstract
The article discusses the concept of the "atopic march," which refers to the sequential development of different atopic conditions in childhood. While not all children follow this sequence or develop all four atopic conditions (atopic dermatitis, food allergy, recurrent wheezing/asthma, and allergic rhinitis), there is a higher risk of developing another atopic condition if a child already has one. The article focuses on the potential link between skin barrier dysfunction and asthma, suggesting that impaired skin barrier function and lower lung function at age 3 months increase the risk of asthma at age 3 years. However, further validation is needed before these associations can be used clinically for diagnosis or prognosis. The article also explores the possibility of preventing asthma through interventions that improve the skin barrier.
