- Abstract
The article discusses a book titled "Slum Imaginaries and Spatial Justice in Philippine Cinema" by Katrina Macapagal. The book explores urban cinema in the Philippines, focusing on the representation of urban poor communities in independent films. Macapagal examines the concept of "slum chronotope" and how it is portrayed in Philippine cinema, particularly during the Marcos dictatorship and the present Duterte administration. However, the article criticizes the book for its lack of reference to the material culture of slums and the social relationships of characters within the slums. Despite this, the article acknowledges the book as a pioneering intervention in Philippine cinema and society.
