- Abstract
The article presents a literary criticism of the story "The Revolt of 'Mother'" by Mary E. Wilkins, published in 1890. It explores themes presented in the story and in Wilkins' later criticism of the work including her belief that the character of "Mother" Sarah Penn did not accurately reflect New England family values at the time, the effect of the U.S. McKinley Tariff Act on the U.S. economy, and consumer culture.
