- Abstract
The article presents an exploration into the life and work of the early 18th-century American portrait painter Justus Engelhardt Kühn. An overview of Kühn's life is given highlighting his place within the large group of artists in colonial Maryland. Kühn's artistic output is surveyed alongside those of his successor Gustavus Hesselius, spanning the first four decades of the 18th-century. Multiple examples of Kühn's work are cited and described along with details of their ownership and subjects.
